A new week, a new batch of books—both finished and being read. Today is…
Ring-the-Bell Monday & It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?
This meme is originated by Jen and Kellee at TeachMentorTexts. Thanks!
{Celebrating the books we’ve read in the past week & the titles we are currently reading.}
Description from IndieBound:
Using humor as the common denominator, a multicultural cast of YA authors steps up to the mic to share stories touching on race.
Listen in as ten YA authors — some familiar, some new — use their own brand of humor to share their stories about growing up between cultures. Henry Choi Lee discovers that pretending to be a tai chi master or a sought-after wiz at math wins him friends for a while — until it comically backfires. A biracial girl is amused when her dad clears seats for his family on a crowded subway in under a minute flat, simply by sitting quietly in between two uptight white women. Edited by acclaimed author and speaker Mitali Perkins, this collection of fiction and nonfiction uses a mix of styles as diverse as their authors, from laugh-out-loud funny to wry, ironic, or poingnant, in prose, poetry, and comic form.
Before you see what the students are reading… what are you reading? Please leave a comment and let us know—and show the students that reading isn’t just a “school” thing.
(For every parent who leaves a comment with what you’re reading, I’ll give your child a BUSTED ticket…)
[Check back at the end of the day to see the cool spinning pictures of what my students are reading.]
Mr. Etkin, Thanks for letting Alyssa borrow the Hunger Games – she’s been wanting to read it, and I never got around to it, and I wanted to read it before she gets to it… Just finished it… I guess books 2 and 3 will be next… thanks again for the lend. – Rob Woodford
Quite welcome. I’m in the same boat with my sixth grader (except I’ve read it). Do you think A is ready for it? Does the violence concern you? It IS a great series.
I guess I posted under 9.23 instead of 9.30…. this blog thing is new to me.
That’s fine. Tell Allyssa to remind me for a Busted Ticket. And enjoy Catching Fire.

David –
It was such a pleasure and a good feeling looking at all the SpinCams on this date. You know how much I love reading and listening to good podcasts. So, when I see all your students seriously reading, it does my heart good! I also look forward to seeing what adults and students email/blog back to you.
You are truly a gifted teacher. (I’m not just saying that because you are my son!!! :-)).
Thanks for taking the time to visit the site, Dad. Are you walking with us in the 11th?
Just finished reading House Rules & My Sisters Keeper. Now reading Handle with Care. All by Jodi Picoult. I really enjoy her books.
Thanks for sharing your great reading… Though I don’t know who you are. 🙂
Sorry I was filling out two things at once. This is Kim Fleck
Just finished Dandelion Fire by N.D Wilson (I’m completely obsessed with this triology! I don’t want to read the last book becasuse I don’t want it to end.) This week I started Bloody Lessons: A Victorian San Francisco Mystery by M. Louisa Locke.
I know that feeling quite well. It’s difficult to say bye to your well-developed characters.
Hi Mr. Etkin! I have decided to visit the blog today. I am sick today and decided to read for a few hours. I’m reading How They Croaked because I couldn’t get to it last year.
I’m so glad you decided to stop by and share your writing–though I’m sorry you’re sick, of course. Keep reading—and don’t be a stranger!
Hope you feel better, Ben. Thanks for coming by!
Oh, and I’m currently reading FANGIRL by Rainbow Rowell. She’s brilliant.
I’ve heard good things. Let me know. 6th grade appropriate?
Now that I, too, am teaching 6th grade, it’s even more fun to see what you’re doing. I have yet to take a Spin Cam this year. Shame on me!
Do it!!
Kailey is reading Wonder, by RJ Palacio. She is up to Part 3 – Summer’s perspective. She loved this book as a read aloud in fifth grade, so now she is rereading it on her own and loving it!
It’s a different experience the second time through. She’ll pick up more this time. What are YOU reading? Thanks for visiting the blog.
Today I finished reading my first David Baldacci novel titled “The Whole Truth”. I really enjoyed it and am very likely to read more of his books.
Baldacci is super exciting. Great summer reading! Thanks for sharing.
J-E-A-L-O-U-S of your copy of Seven Stories Up! Enjoy!! 🙂
Thanks??? I love NetGalley and Edelweiss. Do you belong?
Belong to both but must have failed to get on cue for Seven Stories Up in time… Hmm. Shall wait until January! 🙂
Yeah, it was a lucky find.
