Before I get into the regular stuff, there were some fun student contributions from our week off. Here they are!

Emmie emailed me to let me know that she finished the sequel to Powerless  and loved it, so I tweeted it to the author, Matthew Cody:

Roy is a very curious boy. When he moves a lot and he gets bullied everyday on the morning bus by Dana Matherson. While in the middle of getting smushed by Dana he sees a boy running with no shoes on and wonders why he’s not in school or why he’s not wearing any shoes—right there and then he has to find out why. With no one believing him about what he saw about the boy, there’s other things to worry about. He can’t ride the bus anymore because he got in a fist fight with Dana and hurt the kid bad. While garret (rebel) tries telling Roy that Dana is going to mess him up when he goes back on the bus, he runs into this girl Beatrice who actually saw the boy too.

One day Beatrice caught up to Roy and asked for bandages and beef—a lot of it. They take it to the barefoot the boy who shows them what the meat is for:  owls. Owls living in holes at the construction site where a new restaurant will be opening. Can Roy and his pals save these owls?

This is a caring, interesting, friendly story that shows even if you have the littlest voice you can make the biggest sound.

Samara posted on the last blog about her vacation reading. Here it is in case you missed it:

Going Home

Hi I’m reading “Going home” by Nicholasa Mohr and it’s my 2nd time reading it, it’s just such a good book. But it’s about how girl takes a trip to Puerto Rico with her uncle for the summer and doesn’t really fit in when she first gets there, but by the end of the summer she is wiser.I recommend this book to anyone because it’s just a really good book.

{Samara—you might want to look into her other books.}

This latest installment in the Lunar Chronicles series was great. It’s always fun to learn characters’ back stories. In this case, it was cool to learn the back stories of a few characters I’ve come to know and love… and also one I’ve come to hate. How did Levana come to be the wicked ruler that she is? The answer might surprise you. I’ll admit that I may have even felt a tad bit sympathetic toward Levana. It didn’t last long.
This 3.5 installment makes me even more excited to see what happens with Winter… and Cinder and Iko and Scarlet and Cress and the others… in the final book of the series.

To be born on May 19th, 2015

A fun, boys-in-the-summer kind of book. I remember having a fort and wanting to spend as much time as possible out there. And of course, there are always the trouble kids in the neighborhood to deal with.

This reminded me a bit of Home Alone—a boy against two thieves? What will he do?

KIRKUS REVIEW

What preteen boy wouldn’t love to build a fort in the woods?

DeFelice makes that dream come true. Wyatt, on summer vacation in upstate New York with his dad, and Augie, who lives there all year round with his grandmother, hatch a plan to build a fort in the woods. Augie’s neatly depicted great-uncle and his junkyard buddy provide the necessary materials. Augie’s great-aunt gives them food. Wyatt’s dad offers him the freedom to explore and grow. Augie, something of a modern-day Huckleberry Finn, has ample talent as a woodsman. The very real threat from bullies J.R. and Morrie, and their abuse of mentally disabled Gerard, a good-natured neighborhood kid, provide the impetus for Operation Doom. That plan to defend the fort and protect Gerard (and even provide some justice) leads to a glorious, feel-good climax in which all the right things work out and the bad guys get their richly deserved comeuppance. Along the way, some squirrels are sacrificed by slingshot to provide good meals, and a car-parts calendar that includes photos of attractive young women adds realistic detail, both serving to enhance the authenticity of this captivating tale.

Upbeat, engaging and satisfying; altogether a very fine book, especially for boys looking for a bit of believable, achievable adventure. (Fiction. 9-14)
