This is the Part Where You Laugh

A very interesting book for high schoolers. Travis has sure been dealt a terrible hand. It doesn’t seem fair that so much difficult stuff can happen to one person. The book had a sudden ending that I keep thinking about. I might have to contact the author.

That being said: I really liked the book. I was engrossed from chapter one. I like books that start with a bang. The relationships were so interesting—how Travis deals with his sick grandmother, his aloof grandfather, his best friend “Creature”, his coach, and the cute new girl. I’m looking forward to my students reading this when they’re older.

From Barnes and Noble:

Travis plans to spend the summer as follows:

   • Working on his basketball game with his friend, Creature.
   • Reading excerpts from Creature’s novel-in-progress: Guide to Russian Princesses.
   • Canoeing around the lake, trying to catch a glimpse of the beautiful girl who just moved in.
   • Not getting into trouble, not going back to juvie . . .
   • Searching the homeless camps for his mother, with a jar full of cash to help her get back on her feet.

From a powerful new voice in YA literature comes an unforgettable account of growing up, making mistakes, and growing out of the shadow of drug abuse.

  2. The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman is the perfect middle school novel! It has a little of everything: fright, suspense, plot twists, & humor. If the opening page doesn’t compel you to read the book, you’re crazy! I also highly recommend Duncan, Son of Sagira by E.C. Holley.

    • Glad you liked Graveyard. Pretty creepy…but in a soft way. (?) You can find YouTube videos of him reading the whole book. Duncan? Never heard of it.

      Thanks for joining the fun.
