It’s 1944, and World War II is raging across Europe and the Pacific. The war seemed far away from Margot in Iowa and Haruko in Colorado–until they were uprooted to dusty Texas, all because of the places their parents once called home: Germany and Japan.

Haruko and Margot meet at the high school in Crystal City, a “family internment camp” for those accused of colluding with the enemy. The teens discover that they are polar opposites in so many ways, except for one that seems to override all the others: the camp is changing them, day by day and piece by piece. Haruko finds herself consumed by fear for her soldier brother and distrust of her father, who she knows is keeping something from her. And Margot is doing everything she can to keep her family whole as her mother’s health deteriorates and her rational, patriotic father becomes a man who distrusts America and fraternizes with Nazis.

With everything around them falling apart, Margot and Haruko find solace in their growing, secret friendship. But in a prison the government has deemed full of spies, can they trust anyone–even each other?

My thoughts…
I knew that there were internment camps for Japanese families during WWII. I don’t know if I knew there were camps for Germans. I never considered that both Germans and Japanese would be living in one camp together. Even though the countries were fighting on the same side of the war (they were the Axis powers), they didn’t like or trust one another. The same feelings ring true among the civilians in this camp.
It is interesting to watch these two young ladies, Margot and Haruko, form a friendship that challenges the beliefs of everyone else in the camp. This is another Two POV book, and what we learn about each girl and her feelings and reasons is interesting and surprising— especially in the climax!

After failing a critical assignment overseas, Will Robie must investigate a murder accusation against his father–but to save him, he’ll have to face a violent and deadly fallout in this New York Timesbestselling thriller.

Will Robie escaped his small Gulf Coast hometown of Cantrell, Mississippi after high school, severing all personal ties, and never looked back. Not until the unimaginable occurs. His father, Dan Robie, has been arrested and charged with murder.

Father and son haven’t spoken or seen each other since the day Robie left town. In that time, Dan Robie–a local attorney and pillar of the community–has been elected town judge. Despite this, most of Cantrell is aligned against Dan. His guilt is assumed.

To make matters worse, Dan has refused to do anything to defend himself. When Robie tries to help, his father responds only with anger and defiance. Could Dan really be guilty?

With the equally formidable Jessica Reel at his side, Robie ignores his father’s wishes and begins his own desperate investigation into the case. But Robie is now a stranger to his hometown, an outsider, a man who has forsaken his past and his family. His attempts to save his father are met with distrust and skepticism…and violence.

Unlike the missions Robie undertook in the service of his country, where his target was clearly defined, digging into his father’s case only reveals more questions. Robie is drawn into the hidden underside of Cantrell, where he must face the unexpected and possibly deadly consequences of the long-ago choices made by father and son. And this time, there may be no escape for either of them.

My thoughts…
Baldacci is always a good vacation read. He keeps things interesting and the pages turning. I don’t read many adult books, so when I do it’s a treat.

Description from INDIEbound

New York Times bestseller

An inspiring personal story of redemption, second chances, and the transformative power within us all, from the founder and CEO of the nonprofit charity: water.

At 28 years old, Scott Harrison had it all as a top nightclub promoter in New York City… but 10 years in, desperately unhappy and morally bankrupt, he asked himself, “What would the exact opposite of my life look like?” Walking away from everything, Harrison spent the next 16 months on a hospital ship in West Africa and discovered his true calling. In 2006, with no money and less than no experience, Harrison founded charity: water. Today, his organization has raised over $300 million to bring clean drinking water to more than 8.2 million people around the globe

In Thirst, Harrison recounts the twists and turns that built charity: water into one of the most trusted and admired nonprofits in the world. Renowned for its 100% donation model, bold storytelling, imaginative branding, and radical commitment to transparency, charity: water has disrupted how social entrepreneurs work while inspiring millions of people to join its mission of bringing clean water to everyone on the planet within our lifetime.

In the tradition of such bestselling books as Shoe Dog and Mountains Beyond Mountains, Thirst is a riveting account of how to build a better charity, a better business, a better life—and a gritty tale that proves it’s never too late to make a change.

100% of the author’s net proceeds from Thirst will go to fund charity: water projects around the world.

My thoughts….

I know that the water crisis is close to the hearts of many of you, just as it is close to mine. I listened to this AMAZING book at the recommendation of Uganda James. In fact, I listened to it on the Audible account he has shared with me. I listened to many parts simply amazed, others aghast… and many more through teary eyes. The things he experienced and was able to accomplish—through determination, luck, sheer will, and miracles—are amazing.

This part captures the changes that water can make: Chapter 31 @ 14:40… or 6hrs 57mins in: (listen on Audible)

This is yet another reminder to me: life isn’t just about accumulating stuff for myself. True joy is found when I am able to use my time , energy, and resources helping those who in need.

Listening to this renews my energy as I think of reading A Long Walk to Water next year and doing the water walk. It also gets me excited to be a part of this life-changing, life-giving  work as I co-lead a team to Uganda this summer.

When I finished THIRST, I needed a new book to listen to while I did yard work. This short-ish story was perfect. Fascinating premise for a murder mystery.

Description

Join a family of three who spend nine whole months waiting, from a frosty winter through a sun-dappled summer, until finally . . . a baby is here.

A soon-to-be big sister and her parents prepare for the arrival of a new baby in the family. Alternating panels depict what the family is experiencing in tandem with how the baby is growing, spanning everything from receiving the news about the new baby to the excitement of its arrival.

In this pregnancy book unlike any other one out there, watch what’s actually happening through meticulously detailed, actual size illustrations, perfectly paired with a lyrical yet informative text, and culminating in a warm, joyful birth scene.

Complete with backmatter that includes an elaboration on pregnancy, a list of amazing things babies can do before they’re born, and more, Miranda Paul and Caldecott Honor Artist Jason Chin deliver another spectacular nonfiction picture book.

MY THOUGHTS…
Have you ever known a pregnant woman? For some of you, your mom gave you another sibling… or two or three. For others, it may have been your aunt, sister, or family friend…. or teacher.
It’s funny that this topic makes us a little uncomfortable as we get older. What is so squirmy about a pregnancy.
All mammals get pregnant.
All babies of mammals develop inside their mothers and are born live.
This book shows side-by-side what’s happening in the life of a young girl whose mother is pregnant — and what’s happening to the baby as it develops.
It’s a miracle every time.
